A window to American history

When we bought the house, it was clear to us that we would need to replace the windows. Most of them are the original ones (1929!) and many are painted shut. Some windows have been replaced (we guessed in the 50's or 60's) with large picture windows that don't open. Not sure what they were thinking back then, but the consequence is that there is very little ventilation on the main floor of the house.

So now we're looking into replacing some windows... We were able to get some old pictures of our house from the County Archives - it's very cool to see what our house used to look like.

The house was built in 1929. This picture was taken in 1937:

Then, this is what it looked like in 1961. A well-manicured lawn, defined concrete paths, large picture windows, were the best one could hope for. Indeed, in the mind of the 1950 family, trees are overrated.

We haven't decided on the details, but we're certainly going back to the split craftsman windows...

When the cat's away...

This weekend Melissa is down in California visiting her family. Everybody is getting very excited about the baby! Luc took advantage of these few days of solitude to do some projects around the house, especially the smelly ones.

The best project was to paint the baby's room! Yep, finally admitted that the "office" upstairs won't be an office... We picked colors last week - the orange turned out a little more subtle than we thought, but the purple is very nice. It's going to be a cute room... hopefully soothing for both the baby and the parents.

Other house projects included refinishing the counter top in our bathroom, and replacing a light fixture in the downstairs hallway. Crazy how much time a simple task can take when you have to fight plaster and chisel weird wood pieces. Love this house - you never know what you'll find in the walls (or ceiling).

The house looks pretty good!
